International Women's Day is more than just a date on the calendar (March 8, in case you need a reminder)—it's a celebration of resilience, innovation, and leadership. Across Canada, women entrepreneurs are driving economic growth, creating jobs, and making a lasting impact in their communities. From sustainable fashion to elevated dining experiences, women-owned businesses are transforming industries with passion and purpose.
This year, we’re proud to spotlight inspiring women-led businesses that are part of the Moneris community: Burdock & Co and Ungalli Clothing Co. Each of these businesses has a unique story, a dedication to excellence, and a commitment to empowering those around them.
Here’s a closer look at their journeys and the incredible work they do.
Nestled in Vancouver, Burdock & Co is a farm-to-table gem that showcases the very best of British Columbia’s produce—whether it comes from the land, the sea, or the vine. Founded by celebrated chef Andrea Carlson in 2013, this intimate restaurant is known for its innovative, locally sourced dishes and unwavering commitment to sustainability.
Andrea’s dedication to ethical sourcing and creative cuisine has earned her national recognition, including a Michelin Star.1 This stunning restaurant was featured in TIME’s 2023 List of the World’s Greatest Places.2 Need we say more? With a Michelin star and a reputation for pushing culinary boundaries, Burdock & Co continues to be a leader in Canada’s sustainable dining scene.
We interviewed Andrea for this feature, read on to know more:
Andrea- I wanted to create a space that allowed the neighbourhood to access the same amazing organic produce that at the time was only available to fine dining restaurants.
Andrea- Learning the operations side of a business. As a chef the cooking came easily but managing everything else was the challenge. Asking the questions and learning as you go!
Andrea- Moneris is a trusted brand. My bookkeepers have always supported sticking with Moneris no matter what new players enter the market. It’s important to have that trust.
Andrea- The buttermilk fried chicken add-on to our tasting menu is still a strong contender.
Andrea- Esoteric, playful, optimistic, passionate about food.
Andrea- Right now, we would have David Lynch, Leonard Cohen, Isabella Rossellini, and Yohji Yamamoto. Great Artists poets, monks, and fashion designers. It would be a great convergence, I think.
Andrea- A song… how about the entire Sade catalogue!

Hailing from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Ungalli Clothing Cois transforming the fashion industry with ethical, sustainable apparel. Founded by sisters Hailey and Bree Hollinsworth, Ungalli is a proudly Canadian brand that produces high-quality, eco-friendly clothing using recycled and sustainable materials. The brand takes its name from a secret tree in a well-known South African children’s book, symbolizing strength and sustainability—values that are deeply embedded in its business model.
Beyond sustainability, Ungalli is committed to ethical production.Every piece is made in North America in safe facilities where workers are treated with respect and paid fair wages using materials like recycled plastic bottles and organic cotton. Each Ungalli tee helps divert 10 plastic bottles from landfills, saves 41 days’ worth of drinking water, reduces energy consumption equivalent to 7 hours of lightbulb use, and prevents emissions equal to onekilometre of driving.3With each Ungalli purchase, customers contribute to a movement that blends style with purpose, proving that fashion can be both conscious and impactful.
We interviewed Hailey for this feature, read on to know more:
Hailey- As sisters and co-founders of Ungalli, Bree and I saw firsthand the harsh realities of the clothing industry while working at a uniform manufacturing company together. The impact on people and the planet was undeniable—and we knew there had to be a better way. That’s why we launched Ungalli, starting with graphic tees printed on sustainable fabrics. What began as selling a few t-shirts online has grown into a full-scale wholesale manufacturing business, helping other brands produce high-quality, sustainable apparel and make a meaningful shift toward environmental and social responsibility.
Hailey- Being taken seriously when we were very young. Bree was only 18 and I was only 20 when we first started Ungalli. As young entrepreneurs, the key to being taken seriously is confidence and consistency. Know your stuff, follow through, and build strong connections with people who can support and challenge you. With time and effort, your results will earn the respect you deserve.
Hailey- Moneris has helped us make sure we are getting the best possible rates! They are always there to help when I have questions or when I want to compare pricing and rates with another company. So far, we haven’t found a company who can beat Moneris’ pricing and support.
Hailey- Definitely our custom screen-printed sustainable tees and hoodies!
Hailey- Reliable, innovative, authentic, driven, honest, warm, and fun.
Hailey- Emma Watson because she is a passionate advocate for sustainability and environmental protection.
Hailey- Earth - Lil Dicky (probably the clean version if it’s going to be playing or anything).
