Inspired by her dog, Fergie, Kalia Moses created Chez Ferg, a welcoming space for dogs and their owners in Rosemère, Quebec. Today, she focuses on delivering personalized care and convenience, while Moneris helps keep the business running smoothly.

When a personal need becomes a business opportunity

The idea for Chez Ferg didn’t start with a business plan. It started with a dog named Fergie.

When Kalia Moses couldn’t find a cage-free boarding facility for her dog, she decided to create one herself. That search for a better experience for Fergie led to Chez Ferg, a welcoming space in Rosemère, Quebec, built around freedom, comfort and socialization for dogs, and a strong sense of community for pet owners.

Today, clients can count on cage-free daycare and boarding, grooming services, a café and a boutique featuring Quebec-made products, all designed to make life a little easier for busy pet owners. With support from Moneris payment solutions, Kalia can focus on what matters most: creating a place where dogs and their people feel right at home.

But turning a simple idea into a thriving business took more than a love of dogs. It required rethinking what pet care could look like and building connections around that vision.

How it all started

For Kalia, opening Chez Ferg wasn’t about building a traditional kennel. It was about creating the kind of experience she wanted for Fergie and couldn’t find anywhere else.

As she visited local boarding facilities, Kalia noticed a common theme: dogs spent much of their time in cages or pens. For a social, energetic dog like Fergie, that environment didn’t feel right. Rather than accepting the status quo, Kalia began thinking about what was missing from the boarding experience.

Knowing Fergie, who barks hysterically when she’s caged, I really thought about what the market was missing and what I didn’t find when I toured the kennels.

That question ultimately became the foundation for Chez Ferg. Named after the dog who inspired it all, the business was built around a vision of freedom, socialization and comfort. Instead of focusing on confinement, Kalia created a space where dogs can spend their days playing, exploring and interacting with one another in a more natural environment.

From the beginning, the goal was about more than caring for dogs. Kalia wanted to create a welcoming destination for pet owners as well, bringing together services that simplify daily life while fostering a sense of community.

Today, that vision continues to guide every aspect of Chez Ferg, from its cage-free approach to its support for local Quebec businesses.

What sets Chez Ferg apart

At Chez Ferg, the experience goes beyond daycare or boarding. What keeps customers coming back is the business’s approach to caring for dogs as individuals, not just pets passing through for the day.

While many boarding facilities rely on cages or pens, Chez Ferg was designed to feel more like a home away from home. Dogs spend their days socializing, playing and exploring together, and overnight guests join Kalia and her family rather than being confined to traditional kennels.

We’re really an unconventional kennel. Dogs aren’t kept in cages or in pens for overnight stays. They come with us to sleep at our house.

That philosophy has resonated with pet owners looking for a more personalized experience. Over time, Chez Ferg has evolved into a one-stop destination that combines daycare, boarding, grooming, a café and a boutique featuring products from Quebec-based businesses, many of them women-owned. By bringing everything together under one roof, the business helps pet owners save time while giving them another reason to stay connected to the Chez Ferg community.

The result is a business that stands out not only for the care it provides dogs, but also for the experience it creates for pet owners. Whether they’re dropping off a dog for daycare, stopping in for a coffee or discovering locally made products, customers quickly become part of what makes Chez Ferg special.

Designed around pet owners

Creating a better experience for dogs was only part of Kalia’s vision. She also wanted to save time for the people who care for them.

As a dog owner herself, Kalia understands how quickly busy schedules fill up. That’s why many of the services at Chez Ferg are designed to help customers accomplish more in a single visit. Whether they’re dropping off their dog for daycare, picking up a coffee before work or scheduling a grooming appointment while their dog is already onsite, every detail is intended to simplify the day.

For a lot of owners, mornings are hectic. They can come by in the morning, drop off their dog, pick up their coffee, and head out. While their dog’s at daycare, we can also take care of grooming. It gives customers a little extra time in their day.

Behind the scenes, that convenience requires careful coordination. From managing daycare and overnight stays to grooming appointments, retail operations and café service, Kalia and her team work to ensure each part of the business operates seamlessly. The result is an experience that feels effortless for customers, but is built on thoughtful planning, attention to detail and a genuine understanding of what pet owners need.

This customer-first approach has helped Chez Ferg grow from a simple idea into a trusted part of the local pet community. For Kalia, it’s about more than providing a service; it’s about creating a place where dogs, their owners and the community feel right at home.

Supporting local businesses and building a community

For Kalia, one of the most rewarding parts of owning Chez Ferg is the opportunity to support other entrepreneurs along the way.

As the business grew, she saw an opportunity to use her boutique to showcase products from Quebec-based businesses, many of them also owned by women. It’s a choice that reflects her own experience as a business owner and her belief that small businesses are stronger when they support one another.

Most of what we buy is from women-owned businesses in Quebec to encourage businesses like mine.

That spirit of connection is woven into every part of Chez Ferg. Whether customers are stopping in for a coffee, browsing locally made products or dropping off their dogs for the day, they’re supporting a network of local businesses that share similar values and stories.

Drink on a table

For Kalia, the greatest reward has been seeing the community that has formed around Chez Ferg. Alongside lasting relationships with customers and fellow entrepreneurs, she’s welcomed volunteers who choose to spend their time there simply because they believe in what the business represents. What began as a search for better pet care has grown into a place where dogs, pet owners and animal lovers alike feel a genuine sense of belonging.

Keeping tails wagging and business growing with Moneris

Whether she’s serving customers at Chez Ferg, attending a local festival or participating in a community event, Kalia wants every interaction to be as seamless as possible.

As the business has grown, Kalia has looked for partners who can adapt just as quickly. For her, that means having payment solutions that are reliable, flexible and available when she needs them most.

Moneris quickly offered solutions to my problems. When I needed a machine on the fly, within 24 hours, that would allow me to accept payments out in the middle of a field during a festival, Moneris was there.

For Kalia, the value of Moneris goes beyond processing payments. It’s the peace of mind that comes from knowing support is only a phone call away and that her business can continue running smoothly, leaving her free to spend less time troubleshooting and more time with the four-legged guests who inspired it all.

Those little solutions and those little ways that Moneris is there for its clients make all the difference.

Just as pet owners trust Chez Ferg to care for their dogs, Kalia trusts Moneris to help support the day-to-day needs of her business. That dependable partnership allows her to focus on what she loves most: creating a welcoming experience for every dog, every customer and every member of the Chez Ferg community.

Turning an idea into something meaningful

Looking back, Kalia’s journey is a reminder that some of the best business ideas start with a simple question.

The challenge of finding the right boarding experience for Fergie revealed a need shared by many other pet owners. By staying true to her vision, listening to her customers and creating the kind of experience she wanted for her own dog, Kalia transformed that insight into Chez Ferg: a business inspired by one dog and shaped by a desire to make life a little better for both pets and their people.

Experience the Chez Ferg difference

What started with one dog’s need for a different kind of boarding experience has grown into a community built around dogs, their owners and a shared belief that pet care can be done differently.
