Tipping

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes, merchants have control over tip settings – including amounts and percentages on their devices.

Since Moneris serves businesses across a wide range of industries, tipping is not enabled by default. Enabling the feature, however, is easy and can be customized for quick selection of specific amounts and percentages. All devices come with a user guide, which has a section dedicated to tip settings and the various customizations available. Online and interactive user guides for all terminals can also be found at support.moneris.com.

  • Tipping is completely up to the merchant, and Moneris’ terminals support a variety of customizations that can easily be enabled or disabled based on the needs of the business and their customers. Moneris does not send devices to merchants with tipping enabled by default.

  • During a standard transaction, customers are presented with a total amount, which includes tax, before being shown the option to provide a tip. Placing the tip prompt at the end of the transaction helps illustrate that tax has already been applied to the subtotal only, and it is not added to any gratuity the customer would like to give the business.

  • Within the tip setting menu of devices, merchants can enable tip by dollar amount or percentage. In addition, merchants can create and adjust pre-set amounts to make tip selection easier for customers.

  • Merchants may enable a “tip warning” to protect customers from data entry errors. The warning displays a confirmation prompt, allowing customers to revise or proceed with their entry.

There is also a ‘No Tip’ option that is always presented and cannot be removed by a merchant via terminal settings.

  • All merchants receive a user guide when they receive their device, which has a section dedicated to tip settings and how to enable the various options. Online and interactive user guides are available for all terminals at: support.moneris.com.

  • Tip conventions differ per business and region, so there’s no one size fits all amount for a default warning.

Additionally, mistakes happen from time to time when entering tip amounts, but there are best practices that both a customer and merchant can do to help minimize unintended errors. For example, always double check the amount entered before confirming a payment. If an error does occur, the transaction can be refunded or voided.
