Data Stories from Giving Tuesday 2021

January 07, 2022 Calculating time...

There may have been a decline in donations to charities in 2020 alongside the loss of many fundraising events due to COVID restrictions, but volumes recovered to pre-pandemic levels by Q2 2021 with the arrival of vaccines on the horizon.

  • Last year, Canadians gave 80% more on Giving Tuesday as compared to 2019.
  • While there were less donations on Giving Tuesday this year than last year, there was an 88% increase in donations week-over-week and higher volumes of donations throughout 2021 compared to pre-pandemic times.
  • This year the average donation size also increased to $113.00 up from $105.00 in 2020.
  • Top three most popular donation categories by dollar amount this Giving Tuesday were:

Sports and Wellness (including youth and community support programs)
Hospitals
Wildlife & Environment

  • In 2020, the top three most popular charitable organizations were:

Humanitarian Aid
Sports and Wellness (including youth and community support programs)
Disease Research & Prevention

Giving is still top of mind for Canadians year round. With the return of fundraising campaigns this year monthly donation levels were back to pre-pandemic levels by the summer this year (Q2 2021).

  • By Q2 2021, as COVID restrictions began to lift during the vaccine roll out and consumers were feeling more optimistic about the economy and job opportunities, there was a positive increase in donation volumes all across the country.
  • In fact, Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI saw donations above pre-pandemic levels by Q2 2021.
  • Newfoundland saw the highest increase in donation volumes in Q2 at 144% compared to the year prior, followed by PEI (97%) and Nova Scotia (88%).
