Consumer Spend Trend: 2022 FIFA World Cup Finals Was a Win For Bars in Canada

January 24, 2023 Calculating time...

The 2022 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and France was arguably the best world cup final ever. From iconic goals to a penalty face-off, the world cup final match had the recipe for the ultimate nail-biting game. Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties and fans couldn’t keep calm as Argentina skipper Lionel Messi finally held the World Cup trophy in his hands.

The world cup final will be remembered for both–Messi’s awaited moment of victory and Kylian Mbappé’s hat trick in defeat.

Many fans across Canada either tuned in at home or turned out to celebrate at bars and restaurants.

Moneris Data shows that for all of Canada, bar and restaurant spend was up over 10%.

Here are some other year-over-year results:

- British Columbia was down significantly. In addition to having the most prominent time zone adjustment, adverse winter weather also likely dampened spending.

- Moving from West to East, spending by province picks up. Atlantic Canada followed by Ontario showed the most significant increases in bar and restaurant spending.

- While in-person sales may have picked up for the final, UEAT data shows online orders were unchanged year-over-year for Quebec.

In 2022, Canada returned to the World Cup, and in 2026, the World Cup comes to Canada –fans and businesses have a lot to look forward to.

- When the World Cup comes to North America in 2026, we expect to see spend increase for restaurants and the tourism industry as a whole–similar to the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.

- Moneris data from sporting events throughout the year shows that fans and businesses have a lot to be excited for–especially since ten group stage matches are set to be played in Canada.
