SHIPPING INTERNATIONALLY
In recent months, we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of fraudulent orders being placed with Canadian businesses. Often, the merchant will receive a small initial order from an overseas customer, aimed at establishing a business relationship and a comfort level. Then merchants receive a second order (again via telephone or email), requesting shipment of a large quantity of merchandise to an overseas address.
Due to the nature of these transactions, merchants who unknowingly process the fraudulent transactions, end up suffering extensive financial losses.
You should be cautious when you encounter any of the following:
- Orders placed by email or telephone
- Orders placed by a telephone relay service (for the hearing impaired)
- Order that are to be split between numerous credit card numbers
- Declined or card pick up responses when requesting authorization
- Requests for products that you do not sell in your normal course of business
- Orders where the value of the product to be shipped is excessive in comparison to your normal sales volume
- Orders where the shipping address is different from the Cardholder address
NOTE - Orders bearing any of the above characteristics should be considered as high risk.
CAUTION - BE AWARE
- You are financially responsible for all cardholder disputes and chargebacks on these orders for up to 240 days from the date of the transaction.
- Your merchant application must have been approved by Moneris Solutions in order to process e-commerce and mail/telephone transactions.
- Obtaining an authorization number only means that the card had sufficient credit available at the time of the transaction. It does not mean that the cardholder authorized the transaction, nor will it prevent a chargeback.
- Excessive fraud and/or chargebacks may result in the termination of your Merchant Account.
HINTS & TIPS
- Ensure that you are authorized by Moneris to process card not present transactions
- Recognize the chargeback potential associated with these transactions
- Obtain the CVC2(MasterCard) or the CVV(Visa) - 3 digit number on the signature panel of the card
- Telephone our Call Centre and request validation of the CVC2/CVV and a name and address verification for the Cardholder (if either of these fail - do not process the transaction)
*NOTE - Although the above actions may reduce your risk of exposure, they will not guarantee that the sale is legitimate.
